POLAND TOWNSHIP Trustees pick chairman, set 2016 meeting times

Staff report

POLAND

Township trustees selected Eric Ungaro as board chairman for 2016 at their re-organizational meeting Monday and also took care of a number of necessary business items such as setting meeting times for next year and approving temporary appropriations.

The board will meet at 6 p.m. on the second Wednesday of each month, except for its January meeting at 6 p.m. Jan. 6.

The board approved a resolution authorizing heads of the fiscal, administration, police, road and zoning departments to make purchases of up to $1,000 throughout the year. The board also authorized appropriations that will carry the township to March 31, when a permanent full-year budget must be set by state law.

The board voted to appoint all full-time and part-time township employees, with a 30-hour weekly limit and 1,500-hour annual limit for part-time workers. Appointment of department heads – township Administrator James Scharville, zoning inspector Robert Monus, road working foreman Tom Monus and police Chief Brian Goodin – also were approved.

All items were unanimously approved, with one exception. Trustee Joanne Wollet abstained from voting on the re-appointment of Scharville to the township administrator position. She cited concerns she has about the retire-rehire formula for public employees, under which Scharville was rehired by the township.

Wollet would like the board to come up with a formal policy that would limit rehiring of retired employees, she said.
