Chosen for program

Dr. Larry Capots, a Youngstown native, was recently selected as a member of a Lockheed Martin Fellows Program.

Capots attended Chaney High School and attended Youngstown State University under a scholarship from the West Side Merchants Association, where he received a bachelor’s degree in physics. He earned a master’s degree in science and his doctorate in physics at Georgetown University.

He began his career in the aerospace industry in 1979 working for Fairchild Space Co. in Germantown, Md., where he was engineering manager and then director of research and development.

At Fairchild, he invented the Solid State Recorder to solve early failures of space-rated tape recorders, marking the end of mechanical recorders in space. He progressed to vice president and chief technology officer for CTA Inc. in Rockville, Md., and to Loral Space in Palo Alto, Calif., where he managed research and development for high power commercial communications satellites.

He then joined the Advanced Technology Center at Lockheed Martin Space Systems Co. in Palo Alto, where he was responsible for creating architectures that would be important to the future of satellite business initiatives. He received multiple patents.

He is now a mission success lead for the ATC satellite programs. As an aviation professional, Capots is also a FAA gold seal-certified flight instructor with an airline transport pilot rating.
