Valley man appears in scene in film

Staff report

Jay Nagy of Warren went to a “Concussion” filming session in Pittsburgh in hopes of being an extra, and wound up with significant screen time in one scene.

Nagy plays Thomas Kimble, a death-row inmate wearing an orange prison jumpsuit, in a courtroom scene. It’s not a speaking role.

Kimble was not a football player but a mentally challenged man. Dr. Bennet Omalu, the protagonist of the story played by Will Smith, gets him out of prison.

The scene was shot in the Washington County Courthouse in Washington, Pa. “It’s at the beginning of Dr. Omalu’s career,” said Nagy.

Why did he get picked for the part? “The director [Peter Landesman] was looking for a 40-year-old man and picked me from all the extras.”

Nagy worked with Smith in the scene and was impressed with the top-tier actor. “He is a humble guy, laid back,” said Nagy. “He joked with everybody.”

Nagy usually tries out as an extra for the many films that are shot in Pittsburgh and Cleveland, and can be seen in “Criminal Activities,” “The Last Witch Hunter” and “Walker Payne.”

“It’s a blast,” he said.
