Powers replaces stage rigging

Staff report

YOUNGSTOWN

The Youngstown Symphony Society recently was awarded a $20,000 grant from the Youngstown Foundation for the replacement of the rigging equipment and related components at Powers Auditorium, downtown.

During a recent inspection, Tiffin Scenic Studios found the 1931 system, which had undergone minimal upgrades in 1969, to be unsafe and in need of replacement to reduce the risk of failure.

Work on the rigging system was undertaken by Tiffin and members of the local International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees union. The work was completed in October.

Powers Auditorium, in the DeYor Performing Arts Center complex, is the only facility in the region that is both a concert hall and a theatrical stage.

During the month of December, more than 15,000 people attended performances at the DeYor, in addition to a number of private celebrations and graduations.
