POLICE CALLS
A summary of recent criminal activity in Girard, Liberty and Hubbard:
GIRARD
Dec. 18
Breaking and entering: Someone broke into a South Davis Street residence before removing 150 to 200 pounds of copper from the basement.
Theft: A set of keys was taken from a vehicle in the 20 block of South State Street.
Criminal mischief: A woman discovered a kitchen window and screen were broken at her Otis Court home, resulting in $300 worth of damage.
Dec. 19
Possible arson: Police assisted city firefighters with a shed on fire in the 500 block of East Liberty Street. During a follow-up investigation, traces of an accelerant were found, a police report said.
Theft: Three juveniles reportedly removed a lighting system from a yard in the 200 block of Ohio Avenue. When confronted, they fled, police said.
Dec. 20
Domestic violence: A charge was pending after a West Second Street woman alleged her husband had punched her face several times, used a shirt to bind her hands behind her back and threatened her with a knife during an argument related to the accuser’s refusal to give him money. The victim had several scratches, a bloody nose and blood on her clothing and face, a report showed.
Theft: A Hazel Street woman reported 19 of her son’s over-the-counter pills were missing.
Theft: A $200 laser light was taken from a yard in the 100 block of North Davis Street.
Dec. 21
Drugs: An Ohio Avenue man called police after having discovered in his home a small quantity of suspected marijuana that he alleged belongs to a family member. No charges had been filed at the time of the report, however.
Theft: A Dearborn Street woman noticed a Sony PlayStation 3 game missing from her car.
Drugs: Officers answered a call pertaining to possible drug activity near U.S. Route 422, where they arrested 20-year-old Samantha Thurman of North State Street, Girard, and 31-year-old Ryan S. Channell of Perkinswood Drive, Warren, on drug-related charges. Channell admitted having used heroin; also, a suspected crack-cocaine pipe, a spoon and a needle were found, authorities alleged.
Dec. 22
Counterfeit: A woman reportedly passed a phony $20 bill at the Alumni Inn, 346 S. Market St.
Theft: The owner of a North State Street business discovered two Christmas trees had been stolen.
Harassment: A Parkview Drive woman told police a man called claiming her grandson was in jail and that she needed to send $1,380 via a money gram. Nevertheless, the accuser provided no money or personal information.
Criminal damaging: Someone reportedly tried to push open a door to a home in the 300 block of Illinois Avenue and did $300 in damage to the frame.
LIBERTY
Dec. 17
Arrest: The Ohio State Highway Patrol handed to township authorities Champaign Tarver, 20, of Monticello Boulevard, Liberty, who was wanted on a Girard Municipal Court warrant.
Arrest: Police arrested 40-year-old Tommy Favor of Kent upon his release from the Portage County jail. He was wanted on a Liberty Township warrant.
Dec. 18
Arrest: Authorities picked up 32-year-old Jacie L. Palumbo of East Evergreen Avenue, Youngstown, who was wanted on a probation-violation charge from the township.
Arrest: Vincent M. Kather Jr., 29, of Secrist Lane, Girard, was booked at the Mahoning County jail on a Girard Municipal Court warrant.
Theft: Gregory Jones Sr., 54, of Manchester Avenue, Youngstown, was charged in the theft of $46 worth of merchandise from Citi Trends, a clothing store at 3495 Belmont Ave. Jones also was wanted on a warrant accusing him of failing to appear in court on a theft charge.
Theft: Douglas M. Uher, 30, of Hadley Avenue, Liberty, was charged with one count of theft. Uher, who also was wanted on a probation-violation charge, was accused of stealing a $15 shirt from Citi Trends.
Dec. 19
Theft: A vehicle check in the 1100 block of Church Hill-Hubbard Road revealed that both license plates had been reported stolen in Youngstown.
Dec. 20
Arrest: Ashtabula County authorities transferred custody of 23-year-old Sha-Layah M. Harris to township police. Harris, of Parkcliff Avenue, Youngstown, was wanted on a probation-violation charge related to one count of obstructing official business.
Recovered property: A bag of prescription medication and syringes that belongs to a Youngstown man were found and turned over to a Goldie Road pharmacy.
Dec. 21
Arrest: Beaver Township police relinquished custody of William T. Darkadakis of Lancaster Avenue, Youngstown, to Liberty authorities. The 36-year-old Darkadakis was wanted on a Girard Municipal Court warrant.
Dec. 22
Theft/forgery: A Colonial Drive woman told police her bank informed her that someone had forged and cashed at least three of her checks for a total of $150.
HUBBARD
Dec. 17
Assault: A Smith-Stewart Road man reported having been pushed in the shoulder area while at a Hubbard bowling alley.
Dec. 18
Recovered property: A man walking in the city found a wallet that contained money and a South Carolina driver’s license.
Identity fraud: An Oak Knoll Drive woman discovered three unauthorized charges to her credit card that totaled $202.69 and apparently originated in Bowling Green, Ohio.
Dec. 19
Incident: Police assisted Hubbard firefighters who were called to a washing-machine fire in the 20 block of Orchard Avenue. The fire was later determined to be suspicious, a police report stated.
Dec. 20
Recovered property: A Jones Street woman reported having found two gift cards while walking near her residence.
Dec. 21
Damage: A Water Street woman reported a man with whom she lives used his truck to push her vehicle out of the way, causing damage, when she refused to move the car to allow him to leave. The incident apparently took place during an argument related to his having been drinking, a report showed.
