A South Garland Avenue man is in the Mahoning County jail on $35,000 bond after his arraignment Wednesday in municipal court on charges that he inflicted injuries on a 2-month-old boy so severe the child is now on life support.

John Albino Serrano, 31, was arraigned before Magistrate Anthony Sertick on a charge of felonious assault, a second-degree felony. Court records show the charge was filed Monday, and Albino Serrano was booked into the jail the same day.

Court records show the victim, Albino Serrano’s infant son, is on life support at the main campus of Akron Children’s Hospital in Akron.

Police were called to ACH Mahoning Valley in Boardman about 11 a.m. Dec. 15. Reports said hospital staff said the baby had brain injuries and was undergoing treatment there before he was flown by helicopter to Akron.

Albino Serrano and the child’s mother were both present. Reports said Albino Serrano told police he was feeding the baby when the baby stopped breathing and became unresponsive. Albino Serrano told police he then woke his wife up, who called an ambulance to take the child to the hospital.

Court records show Albino Serrano later admitted to police he shook the baby.

Court records show Albino Serrano has only one previous charge of driving under suspension from 2014.

The case was investigated by city police officers James Rowley and Michael Brindisi, members of the department’s Family Investigative Services Unit.
