Attorney files objection to order than Kimble appoint teach to commission

YOUNGSTOWN — Atty. Ted Roberts filed an objection this morning to a magistrate’s decision that directed Brenda Kimble to appoint an active classroom teachers to the city schools academic distress commission.

Kimble, president of the city school board, appointed Carol Staten, a retired principal and substitute administrator to the commission.

The five-member commission will appoint a chief executive officer to manage and operate the city schools. The CEO, who will be paid by the state, will have broad authority.

Under the Youngstown Plan, one commission appointee, a teacher, is appointed by the school board president.

The Youngstown Education Association went to court and asked for an injunction barring Staten from serving on the commission and asking that Kimble be ordered to appoint an active teacher.

Last week, Daniel Dascenzo, a Mahoning County Common Pleas Court magistrate, agreed and gave Kimble two days to appoint a teacher.

Roberts’ objection said Staten is licensed as both an instructor and a principal. Staten considers herself a teacher, she told the magistrate last week.

“‘Teacher has many hats and I have worn most of them, principal, assistant principal, supervisor, but you’re always a teacher, whether you’re teaching students or adults,’” Roberts’ objection quotes Staten saying. “‘So I do consider myself a teacher.’”
