Crash into cruiser

JOHNSTON

The Ohio State Highway Patrol Southington Post is investigating a three-vehicle, rear-end crash involving a Trumbull County deputy sheriff that caused a minor injury to one of the other drivers.

The accident occurred at 2:20 p.m. Tuesday on the state Route 5 overpass over state Route 11 in Johnston Township.

Deputy Mike Davis, 45, of Niles was westbound on Route 5 and stopped on the berm of the overpass in his police vehicle.

A car driven by Jamie Nipple, 38, of Kinsman, also was westbound on Route 5 approaching the overpass, as was a sport utility vehicle, driven by Margaret Struna, 40, of Williamsfield, which was behind Nipple’s car.

Nipple’s car slowed for the stopped patrol vehicle and was struck in the rear by the SUV. The impact pushed Nipple’s car into the patrol vehicle. The police vehicle then overturned and came to rest on its top.

Nipple suffered minor injuries and was treated at the scene. No other injuries were reported. There were two children in Nipple’s car and three in the SUV. A state trooper cited Struna for failure to maintain assured clear distance.
