Jury: No felony in woman’s jail death

HEMPSTEAD, Texas

A grand jury has decided no felony crime was committed by the sheriff’s office or jailers in the treatment of a black woman who died in a Southeast Texas county jail last summer.

But prosecutor Darrell Jorden says the Waller County grand jury on Monday reached no decision on whether the trooper that arrested 28-year-old Sandra Bland should face charges. The grand jury will return in January to consider that.

The Chicago-area woman was pulled over July 10 by a Texas state trooper for making an improper lane change. Dashcam video showed their interaction quickly became confrontational and she was arrested for assault.

Turkish military operations in the southeast have killed 115 Kurdish rebels since last Tuesday, a state-run news agency reported Monday.

Most of the casualties were centered in the southeastern towns of Cizre and Silopi, both under 24-hour curfew, with 98 rebels killed, according to Anadolu Agency. Other casualties occurred in the provinces of Mardin and Diyarbakir.

The government says militants linked to the outlawed Kurdistan Workers’ Party, or PKK, have placed explosive devices, dug trenches and set up barricades in these areas. Turkey has vowed to press ahead with the operations.

Chelsea Clinton expecting 2nd child

WASHINGTON

There may be one more Clinton on the campaign trail next fall.

Chelsea Clinton, the only child of former President Bill Clinton and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, announced Monday that she is expecting her second child next summer.

Chelsea Clinton, 35, and her father have largely stayed off the campaign trail since Hillary Clinton launched her Democratic bid for the presidency in April.

Both have said they plan to intensify their public political roles after the New Year in an effort to boost Clinton’s campaign just six weeks before the first round of primary voting.

Man charged in interstate shootings

ARAPAHO, Okla.

A Texas man accused of killing two people while randomly firing his gun along an Oklahoma interstate was charged Monday with first-degree murder.

Jeremy Doss Hardy, 36, of Pasadena, Texas, was arraigned on the two counts in Custer County. Police have said the suspect shooter sped through three counties while firing from his pickup truck along Interstate 40, west of Oklahoma City, and hit at least four vehicles. He surrendered after a 25-mile chase early Thursday.

Court documents filed Monday say Hardy agreed to take a breath test that showed his blood-alcohol level at 0.16, twice the legal limit for driving.

Fox announces date, team for Iowa debate

NEW YORK

Fox News Channel says it will host the seventh Republican presidential debate, taking place next month in Des Moines, Iowa, ahead of that state’s caucuses.

Fox said Monday that the two-hour debate Jan. 28 will be anchored by Bret Baier, Megyn Kelly and Chris Wallace. That’s the same team that moderated the campaign’s first GOP debate in August, which drew a cable- news record audience of 24 million people. The sixth debate will be shown on the Fox Business Network on Jan. 14.

The GOP field narrowed Monday with Sen. Lindsey Graham’s announcement that he was ending his campaign.
