High-school students can get exposed to STEM at Westminster College

Staff report

NEW WILMINGTON, PA.

“The best way to demonstrate the level of enthusiasm and rigor Westminster College offers in STEM is for students to experience it for themselves,” said Terri Lenox, division chairwoman and professor of computer science.

Westminster College has opened registration for the upcoming Science, Technology, Engineering and Math visit day Jan. 22 in the McKelvey Campus Center.

The event is tailored to high-school students interested in STEM disciplines.

“Unlike many colleges and universities, Westminster STEM students have the opportunity to start working with a faculty member from the moment they step onto campus,” Lenox said. “Our students gain research experience in a collaborative environment where they develop software, build robots, examine the fractal patterns in cancer cells, help local environmental agencies test water quality, examine the effect of the environment on nicotine addiction and do countless other projects.”

Check-in begins at 11:45 a.m. in the McKelvey Campus Center with a complimentary lunch until 12:30 p.m. in Duff Dining Hall.

After the welcome and open remarks at 12:40 p.m., students will choose from various discussions during two 45-minute breakout sessions at 1 and 2 p.m.

Current students will present their research at 3 p.m. in Mueller Theater. An optional campus tour will take place at 4 p.m.

High-school students will have the opportunity to meet with Westminster’s faculty and students and tour academic facilities.

Attending the STEM visit day provides students with a snapshot of studying biology, chemistry, computer science, engineering, physics, materials science, math, neuroscience, physics or psychology at Westminster College, Lenox said.
