1777: Gen. George Washington leads his army of about 11,000 men to Valley Forge, Pa., to camp for the winter.

1843: “A Christmas Carol” by Charles Dickens is first published in England.

1998: President Bill Clinton is impeached by the Republican-controlled House on charges of perjury and obstruction of justice (he subsequently was acquitted by the Senate).

1990: A car crashes through a wall of Antone’s Restaurant on McKinley Way in Poland after the owner said the gas pedal stuck. There were no serious injuries, but the restaurant is closed until repairs are made.

Mahoning County Prosecutor James A. Philomena says his office will investigate the $8 million restoration of the county courthouse to determine whether state bidding and contract laws were followed.

A 3-year-old Boardman boy, Jeffrey Penney, who does impressions of Ronald Reagan, Ed Sullivan, John Wayne and several other celebrities, wins a $2,000 third-place prize from ABC’s “America’s Funniest People.”

1975: Robert L. Dawson, Warren’s urban-renewal director, is named safety-service director by Mayor Arthur J. Richards.

Mahoning County Domestic Relations Judge John J. Leskovyansky administers the oath of office to Municipal Judge Frank X. Kryzan and Clerk of Courts Rosemary Durkin.

Kenneth F. McMahon, president of Youngstown Building Material & Fuel Co., is elected president of the Youngstown Chamber of Commerce.

1965: Ohio State University President Novice G. Fawcett recommends that the board of trustees scrap its plan to build a $300,000 home for university presidents. The house was to be built from gifts and donations solicited for a special fund but still became controversial.

George and Margaret Erickson of Sharon make and package 45,000 popcorn balls in their home for sale in their store on East Railroad Street.

William Waver is appointed general superintendent of the Sharon Works of General American Transportation Corp.

1940: Visitors to city hall find a 15-foot Christmas tree in the lobby, decorated by engineering-department employees. The tree was cut at Youngstown Municipal Court.

Verne J. Wilson, president of Union National Bank, is elected president of the Youngstown Chamber of Commerce.

Many homeowners start getting their Christmas decorations together to enter the Home Lighting Contest sponsored by the Junior Chamber of Commerce.

American Legion Post 15 sponsors a children’s show at the Warner Theater. Admission will be by canned food instead of a ticket.
