November is Pancreatic Cancer Awareness Month and the students at Canfield Village Middle School showed their support for the cause on Nov. 13. The day was designated as Purple for a Purpose and World Pancreatic Cancer Awareness Day and the students were encouraged to wear as much purple as they could, from head to toe.

The homeroom which showed the most support with its purple attire was rewarded with a treat from the cafeteria.

During the week of Nov. 9-12, volunteers sold purple bead necklaces during all middle school lunch periods. The students could buy as many beads as they liked and wear them all week to show their support.

All monies raised were donated to Pancreatic Cancer Action Network.

Purple for a Purpose was started last year by Jake Billak and his mother, Nicole, to raise pancreatic cancer awareness. Jake is a seventh-grade student at Canfield Village Middle School and last year lost his aunt, Nicole’s sister, to pancreatic cancer. Canfield Village Middle School nurse Regina Reynolds was also instrumental in planning the week.

“All of us have been touched in some way by cancer. Pancreatic cancer is one of the deadliest forms of cancer. Seventy-five percent of people diagnosed with pancreatic cancer will die within the first year of diagnosis. This is why we need to unite in our effort to raise awareness and funds,” said Nicole.
