No raises in Struthers

STRUTHERS

A measure that would have set raises for elected officials in Struthers died in committee Wednesday.

Michael Patrick, councilman at-large, took issue with the legislation being brought before council at what he described as the 11th hour.

Before the introduction of the proposed salary schedule by Councilman Tony Fire, D-1st, during the finance and legislation committee meeting, council had not formally laid eyes on the raises, Patrick said.

“Ramrodding it down with one meeting left ‘til the end of the year is, to me, old-time politics,” Patrick said. “This is public service, not personal service. If you feel you need a raise ... we should have formal talks about it at an open meeting.”

The proposed ordinance included raises for the mayor, council members, the law director and the auditor ,effective Jan. 1.

South Side chase ends in arrest

YOUNGSTOWN

A man wanted on a warrant was caught by police after a chase on the South Side on Tuesday evening.

Officers tried to pull over a car about 6:25 p.m. driven by Richard James Armstrong, 37, of First Street, at Southern Boulevard and East Lucius Avenue for an expired plate. Instead, the car fled and led police on a chase across Market Street to the first block of West Princeton Avenue, where reports said the car stopped and Armstrong and a juvenile passenger ran away.

Armstrong and the passenger were both caught in a nearby wooded area. Police found out Armstrong was wanted on a warrant for a weapons offense and also charged him with fleeing and eluding and obstructing official business, and he was taken to the Mahoning County jail.

The juvenile was cited into juvenile court for obstructing official business because he ran away after the car stopped.
