Judge OKs money transfer to Niles general fund

WARREN

A judge in Trumbull County Common Pleas Court this morning approved the transfer of $474,200 in "dormant" Niles funds Niles to the city's general fund.

The Niles auditor, Giovanne Merlo, said after the hearing the money will be used to balance out the city's accounts for the end of the year and provide a carryover balance of about $300,000.

When the process was started, it was believed the money might be needed to avoid layoffs at the end of the year, but other cost-saving measures made that a moot point, Merlo said.

There won't be any layoffs the last two weeks of the year, he said, adding, however, that that decision is made by the mayor, not him.
