December offers savings on vehicles

YOUNGSTOWN

With year-end promotions underway, consumers interested in midsize, large or premium cars or midsize utility vehicles may enjoy the highest percentage off MSRP this holiday season.

New vehicles hold steady at 24.3 mpg

WASHINGTON

The government says new cars and trucks averaged 24.3 miles per gallon last year, marking no improvement.

The Environmental Protection Agency says fuel economy stayed flat as technological improvements to automotive engines and transmissions were offset by a resurgent demand for larger vehicles.

The EPA originally reported the 2013 average at 24.1 miles per gallon, but later revised that figure up by two-tenths of a mile per gallon. Falling gas prices and consumers’ rekindled love of SUVs could endanger future fuel-economy gains.

Housing starts climbed in Nov.

WASHINGTON

A big jump in apartment construction in the Midwest and South boosted the pace of homebuilding in November, marking a solid bounce back after tumbling in October. Construction of single-family houses also increased and reached an eight-year high.

The Commerce Department said Wednesday that total housing starts – both houses and apartments – climbed 10.5 last month to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 1.17 million homes. The increase reversed much of the drop in starts during October.
