Traffic-light change

Traffic-light change

BOARDMAN

A newly installed traffic light at South Avenue and McClurg Road will begin alternating red and green operation Monday, the Mahoning County Engineer’s Office has announced.

The light now flashes red for eastbound motorists on McClurg Road, who must stop, and amber for South Avenue traffic.

Previously, the intersection had only a stop sign for eastbound motorists on McClurg, who encountered a dangerous left turn if they wanted to go north on the five-lane South Avenue, said Patrick Ginnetti, county engineer.

In June, the county commissioners awarded the $190,247 installation contract for the new traffic light to Foust Construction Inc. of Youngstown.

The new light will feature a turning arrow for northbound vehicles on South Avenue making left turns to go west on McClurg Road.

An average of 21,800 vehicles a day pass through that intersection.

Funds released for elevator project

COLUMBUS

The state Controlling Board has released more than $600,000 for additional elevator repairs at Youngstown State University.

The $628,315 outlay is going toward a larger project that involves updating all the campus’ elevators and related mechanical and electrical systems.

The funds approved will be used to modernize elevators at the M1 Parking Deck, according to documents.

Most of the elevators were installed more than 25 years ago and need to be replaced.
