GREEN Gathering set Friday at Mill Creek MetroParks

Staff report

CANFIELD

Students from Chaney STEM Campus, Boardman Glenwood Middle School and South Range Middle School will participate in a Mahoning Valley Watershed GREEN Gathering as part of the GM GREEN program from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Friday at Mill Creek MetroParks Farm, 7574 Columbiana-Canfield Road.

GM GREEN pairs students with mentors from General Motors’ Lords-town Assembly Plant and the Mahoning County Soil and Water Conservation District to retrieve, test and analyze water samples.

During the spring, students will channel findings into a sustainable action plan addressing water-quality issues in their communities.

GM GREEN sharpens problem-solving skills, improves knowledge of science and the environment and encourages community involvement.

The gathering provides an opportunity for students to engage with local environmental experts and community organizations, learn more about pressing environmental issues, and start planning for future environmental projects.

MCSWCD has been facilitating GM GREEN in Youngstown for five years. The nonprofit Earth Force provides learning resources and coordination to the networks of partners in 42 communities across North America in which General Motors operates.
