Moschella resigns as Columbiana boys coach

COLUMBIANA
On the same day he was announced as one of four coaches who will receive a state honor, Ron Moschella revealed he was resigning as Columbiana boys basketball coach.
Moschella will continue as the Clippers girls coach, a position he’s had for four seasons. He missed Monday’s game at South Range because of an illness.
The Ohio High School Basketball Coaches Association announced on Monday that Moschella, would be one of its four inductees on April 23 in Columbus. Moschella coached Boardman’s girls for 31 years before stepping down in December 2011 due to health reasons,
Wes Cross has been named Columbiana’s interim boys coach. His first game was Tuesday’s 62-40 loss to South Range.
Jeff Hammerton, one of Moschella’s assistant coaches, finished Boardman’s 2011-12 season and has been the Spartans head coach since.
When Moschella’s health improved in the spring of 2012, he took over the Columbiana girls program.
Last year, he became the Clippers’ boys varsity coach as well.
A 1968 graduate of Ursuline High School, Moschella became the Boardman girls head coach in 1981. He guided the Spartans to state appearances in 2005 and 2008.
Moschella began this season with a record of 637-172 in girls games and 14-10 in boys games.
