Sobriety checkpoints net 3 OVI arrests

The Mahoning County Operating a Vehicle while Impaired Task Force and Ohio State Highway Patrol conducted a sobriety checkpoint at 6809 Market St. over the weekend, resulting in three OVI arrests.

There were 230 vehicles that passed through the checkpoint. Officers also conducted saturation patrols in support of the checkpoint and conducted 36 traffic stops.

In addition to the three OVI arrests, the checkpoint and patrols also issued one summons for open container, three for drug abuse, three for possession of drug paraphernalia, five for driving with a suspended license, one arrest for carrying a concealed weapon, three citations for not wearing a seat belt, one citation for marked lanes, one summons for driving without a license, one citation for expired license plates and one driver was arrested on a charge of felony drug trafficking.

New charges possible

A former temporary worker at the Mahoning County Treasurer’s office could be facing new criminal charges.

Treasurer Dan Yemma says the investigation began when Kyheem Underwood, 18, of Youngstown attempted to cash a tax-payment check for more than $3,000, according to 21 WFMJ-TV, The Vindicator’s print partner.

Underwood pleaded guilty and was ordered to pay $37 in restitution to the taxpayer for bank fees. That case was settled in November.

The treasurer says another investigation is underway involving a second incident. The second check was cashed for $175.

Gun, cash, jewelry stolen

YOUNGSTOWN

Police reports said a 9 mm handgun, $2,000 cash and jewelry were taken from a home in the 1200 block of Berkley Avenue sometime Sunday.

The homeowner called police about 2:45 p.m., saying she left home at 11 a.m. When she returned, she discovered a back window had been pried open.Reports said the items were inside a chest and the entire chest was taken.

Twins injured in fight

WARREN

Twin brothers, 22, one with a Warren address and one with a Youngstown address, suffered injuries in a fight with two other men at the intersection of North Park Avenue and Belmont Street Northeast at 6:17 p.m. Sunday.

The twins said two males approached them, and one hit one of the twins with a 2-by-4 in the back.

The assailants got in their car and drove toward the other twin, but the twin threw a piece of metal at the car, shattering a window, and the men in the vehicle left. That twin had a cut above his eye and refused medical treatment.

The twin who had been hit with the 2-by-4 was taken to ValleyCare Trumbull Memorial Hospital by ambulance for treatment.

Talmer to donate $5K to local United Way

Representatives from Talmer Bank and Trust will present a check in the amount of $5,000 to United Way of Youngstown and the Mahoning Valley at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Youngstown State University women’s basketball game vs. Lake Erie in Beeghly Center.

The local funding from Talmer will help fund the United Way Success after 6 initiatives at the Youngstown Community School.

More specifically, the funding will assist with the after-school program that focuses on academics, physical fitness, arts and family engagement opportunities in order to reduce tardiness and absenteeism, increase third-grade-level reading, improve emotional well-being and increase family involvement.

Invited to tutorials

YOUNGSTOWN

Students are invited to take part in one hour of code at 6 p.m. today at Oak Hill Collaborative, 507 Oak Hill Ave.

Participants of all ages can choose from a variety of self-guided tutorials for kindergarten and up. Tutorials work on any modern browser, tablet, smartphone or even with no computer at all.

Code.org’s own tutorials feature Disney’s “Frozen,” Scrat from “Ice Age,” Angry Birds and Plants vs. Zombies. A new “Star Wars” beta tutorial was recently released.

No experience is needed, and light refreshments will be provided.
