A man who briefly held police at bay Saturday morning is in the Mahoning County jail on $530,000 bond.

Akeem Brown, 25, of Shady Run Road, was arraigned in municipal court Monday before Judge Robert Milich on charges of possession of dangerous drugs, rape, kidnapping, trafficking in drugs, possession of drug paraphernalia and obstructing official business.

Police were called about 8:05 a.m. Saturday to the 1100 block of East Indianola Avenue, where they met a woman wearing only a T-shirt who told them that she was at Brown’s home in the 2700 block of Shady Run Road when Brown accused her of stealing jewelry.

The woman told police Brown hit her several times in the head and face with a semiautomatic handgun and forced her to perform sex acts at gunpoint. The woman said she tried to leave but Brown would not let her go, reports said.

Reports said after Brown fell asleep, the woman ran out of the home toward East Indianola Avenue and called police. Reports said she had lumps on her head and scratches on her arms.

Police went to Brown’s home, where Brown denied doing anything. He refused to come outside when police ordered him to, reports said.

Police waited 30 minutes, with officer Dave Wilson, a negotiator, trying to talk Brown out of the home until a supervisor decided to call the Mahoning Valley Crisis Response Team. As the team was on its way, Brown agreed to come out, reports said.

Inside the home, police found 23 pills, four large bags of suspected marijuana and a smaller bag of suspected marijuana, two digital scales, a semiautomatic handgun and the victim’s clothes, reports said. Also found inside the home was a large dog, reports said. The dog was taken by the Mahoning County Dog Warden’s office, reports said.

The woman was taken by ambulance to St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital.
