Health insurance rule to give Ohioans more information

COLUMBUS (AP) — Ohioans will be able to get more information about health care-provider networks from insurance companies beginning next year.

The rule taking effect in January will require insurance companies to update their directories of those providers at least every three months.

The rule put in place by the state Department of Insurance also says insurance carriers’ directories must say if doctors and other providers are accepting new patients and give specific locations where providers are considered “in-network,” The Columbus Dispatch reported Tuesday.

Consumer advocates say that will help consumers and regulators determine if insurance companies have enough doctors, hospitals and other providers in their networks.

The rule also will allow people shopping for coverage to get easier access to health insurers’ online provider networks. It will not apply to dental plans.
