Man faces felony theft charge

GIRARD

A man faces a felony charge of theft following an arrest at Marshall Road shortly after midnight this morning. Police stopped Javier Gonzalez, 29, of Girard after a man called to say someone was driving off in a SUV belonging to the neighbors of the caller. The SUV had been stolen from an unlocked garage at East Broadway Avenue, police said. The vehicle's owners also said some items, including a GPS and cash, had been stolen from another vehicle that had been parked in the garage. Police found a stun gun in Gonzalez's pockets and various phone chargers and CDs in the vehicle. Police believe the items could be connected to a spate of thefts from vehicles reported over the weekend.

Gonzalez was released to the Portage County Sheriff's Office where there is a warrant for his arrest on a drug charge.
