Irving’s return expected by Sunday

ORLANDO, Fla.

Long after the formal portion of the Cleveland Cavaliers’ practice had ended Sunday, Kyrie Irving remained on the court shooting. He shot corner 3-pointers and participated in shooting drills with LeBron James.

Over and over, Irving ran to half court and back to the 3-point line. Catching, shooting, catching, shooting. He’s getting close now. So close he’s getting aggravated the Cavaliers won’t cut him loose.

Just like the 22 games before it, Irving won’t play Tuesday when the Cavs face the Boston Celtics, coach David Blatt said. But that day is coming. Irving is expected to play next Sunday when the Cavs host the Philadelphia 76ers, one team source said, if not before.

McGregor wins in rapid fashion

LAS VEGAS

Conor McGregor stopped Jose Aldo with one spectacular punch just 13 seconds into the first round Saturday night, backing up his bravado and claiming the undisputed featherweight title at UFC 194 on Saturday night.

McGregor (19-2) finished the fight with an electrifying exchange shortly after the opening bell, slipping Aldo’s lead right and cracking Aldo on the jaw with a huge left hand.

Aldo (25-2) actually finished his punch and hit McGregor with a left, but the champ fell senseless to the ground and McGregor pounced, only to be pulled off in victory.

Aldo had won 18 consecutive fights over the last 10 years, but nothing seems to slow McGregor. The loquacious Irish brawler goaded Aldo throughout the promotion of their delayed bout, only to back up every word he said.

Stanford wins soccer crown

KANSAS CITY, Kan.

U.S. national team forward Jordan Morris and the Stanford Cardinal couldn’t be stopped.

Morris scored twice and the Cardinal buried four of their five shots to win their first NCAA title in men’s soccer with a 4-0 win over Clemson in the College Cup final.

Stanford’s four goals were the most in a College Cup final since St. John’s had four goals in the title game in 1996.

“It couldn’t have gone any better,” Stanford coach Jeremy Gunn said. “We looked sharp. We came out on the front foot.”
