Special open house

Special open house

YOUNGSTOWN

The public is invited to a special open house celebrating the opening of the Mercy Health Behavioral Health Institute at St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital. The open house is from 4:30 to 6 p.m. Wednesday at St. Elizabeth, 1044 Belmont Ave.

Located on the seventh floor of the hospital, the BHI represents a $5 million investment to expand the services available to Mahoning Valley residents. The project increased the number of acute-care inpatient beds from 16 to 24 and established a 14-bed geriatric psychiatric inpatient unit.

Light refreshments will be available, and staff members will conduct tours and talk about the BHI’s special features. Because this will be a limited-access unit once it is in use, this is a unique opportunity to visit.

YOUNGSTOWN

Five members of the city’s fire department received promotions Friday.

John Lightly was promoted from captain to battalion chief; Paul Morales and David Ferraro went from lieutenants to captains; and Jeffrey Goodlet and Michael Mahon were promoted from firefighters to lieutenants.

Students evacuated

McDONALD

The students at Roosevelt Elementary School were evacuated from the building just as school started for the day Friday morning after a natural-gas leak was detected.

The students were evacuated to the nearby high school, and parents were contacted to pick up the students, said Superintendent Robert Rostan.

By 11:30 a.m. Friday, most of the 400 students had been taken home.

The gas was turned off shortly after the problem was detected, and repairs were being made to a broken gas meter.

The leak did not affect students at the high school. Classes at Roosevelt will resume Monday, the superintendent said.

Man surrenders

BOARDMAN

A Youngstown man faces a drug-trafficking charge after he surrendered to township police on a warrant Thursday.

Charged is Christopher Cordero, 28, of Garland Avenue.

Township police also moved forward with another drug investigation Thursday, when they executed a search warrant at a Hillman Way apartment.

Charges are pending in that case after the narcotics enforcement unit said it found drugs, paraphernalia, cash and guns there.
