OSU’s Washington cited for solicitation

COLUMBUS

Ohio State officials say defensive lineman Adolphus Washington has been cited by police for solicitation and is due in court Dec. 17.

Buckeyes spokesman Jerry Emig said Columbus police cited Washington Wednesday night with a first-degree misdemeanor.

Emig says coach Urban Meyer will discipline Washington once he gets back in town next week from a recruiting trip.

Washington, a senior, issued an apology Thursday through the university to his team, family and friends. He says he’s disappointed in himself and will learn from his mistake.

Ohio State plays Notre Dame in the Fiesta Bowl on Jan. 1.

Phantoms fall to Steel in year’s first shootout

GENEVA, ILL.

The Youngstown Phantoms fell to the Chicago Steel in a shootout Thursday evening at the Fox Valley Ice Arena by a final score of 5-4. It was Youngstown’s first shootout of the season.

The Phantoms stuck first, when Cam Morrison scored his team leading 13th goal of the season behind a great effort from Alex Esposito. Esposito found Morrison right on the doorstep after forcing a turnover behind the Chicago net.

Alex Esposito shot first and beat Chicago goaltender John Lethemon short side to give Youngstown a 1-0 advantage. However, it was all Steel after that, as Mitch Lewandowski and Johnny Walker beat Phantoms netminder Colin DeAugustine. Matt Alvaro and Yushiro Hirano both failed to score for Youngstown, giving Chicago a 2-1 advantage in the shootout and the win.

The Phantoms will be back in action again tonight and Saturday night in Sioux City, Iowa, against the Musketeers.

Rare Mantle rookie card sells at auction

DALLAS

A rare Topps 1952 Mickey Mantle rookie card has sold at auction for more than $500,000.

Dallas-based Heritage Auctions said the pristine card sold Thursday night to a collector who wanted to remain anonymous for $525,800. A Heritage statement said the price set a record for a Mantle rookie card.

The ’52 Mantle rookie card has long been the most valuable postwar baseball card, with comparable examples selling for $386,000 to $486,000 over the past 12 months. The Mantle card was part of a 407-card set Topps distributed in 1952. However, as a rookie card, it was a “high number” card that didn’t reach the Topps distribution chain before the end of the 1952 season.
