Students at C.H. Campbell Elementary School attended the school’s 17th annual Career Day, which offered them an opportunity to learn about a wide variety of careers Nov. 6.

The event, organized by Diane Dankovich, guidance counselor at C.H. Campbell Elementary and Hilltop Elementary, presented a large selection of careers provided by parent volunteers.

“The kids enjoy Career Day. They look forward to it. They are curious and we want them to know that there are so many different careers they can pursue. Career education is coming to be very important in the school guidance departments, even at this age,” Dankovich said.

Exhibitors included Missi Pompoco, occupational therapist; Chuck Eddy, auto dealer; Jeff Frankford, professional land surveyor; Yuvonka McKinney, medical director RN trainer; Bonita Sharif, computer scientist; Dr. Dan Van Dussen, professor of gerontology at Youngstown State University; Meshelle Navarro, party planner/Captain McFinn; Brittney Koch, paramedic; Brian McCormick, IT analyst; Steve Cocca, business owner; Angela Kearns, social worker at D&E Counseling Linkages Program and Jerry Fulmer, police officer, Youngstown Police Department.

“I love interacting with these children. I especially want them to know that computer science is not just for boys. One of my goals is to get more female students involved in computer science. We want to publicize this career for females, too,” Sharif said.

This is the fourth year Officer Fulmer has participated in Career Day.

“This is my fourth year here. I really enjoy the kids. I want to show them that police officers are not scary and we are people they can talk to and we are here to help,” Fulmer said.

Most of the displays were interactive and many exhibitors brought items to help them explain more clearly what their job entails, along with some souvenirs for the children to take home.

“I would like to thank our professional parent volunteers. We couldn’t do this without them. We have so many different professions here today with a nice variety of career fields. I am also very thankful to the PTO for providing refreshments throughout the day for our professionals,” Dankovich said.
