The Lisbon Post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol is investigating the death of a Salem man who was killed when he was walking in the middle of the eastbound lane of state Route 45 Tuesday night. He was hit by a sport utility vehicle also traveling in the eastbound lane.
Edwin L. George, 77, of Salem, was transported to Salem Regional Medical Center where he died of his injuries. Neither speed nor alcohol was a factor in the crash, which occurred at 9:27 p.m. and remains under investigation by the state patrol.
Neither the driver of the SUV, Thomas F. Thayer, 67, of Lisbon, nor his wife, Mary, was injured. Both were wearing seat belts.
Boardman house fire
BOARDMAN
A mother and her two children escaped without injury from their home in the 400 block of Mathews Road when a fire ignited in a front room of the two-story wood-frame structure about 3:45 p.m. Thursday.
Fire damage was contained to the room in which the blaze started, but the rest of the home sustained smoke and heat damage, said Brian Barber, assistant chief of the Boardman Township Fire Department.
The cause of the fire and the estimate of damage will not be determined until the investigation is completed. Police blocked traffic on Mathews for a short time so hoses could be placed across the road to a water source. The Red Cross was called to the scene to assist the family, officials said.
