Motorist charged with DUI in Liberty

A Youngstown man will be arraigned Tuesday in Girard Municipal Court on several charges, including driving under the influence and failure to yield at an intersection.
Officers responded Wednesday afternoon to a two-vehicle crash on Belmont Avenue. Witnesses told police that Hayward Woods, 75, of Youngstown hit the side of another car while attempting to turn onto Fairlawn Avenue.
According to the police report, Woods smelled of alcohol and had slurred speech and red eyes and could not complete a series of field-sobriety tests, the report states. It also states that Woods agreed to take a blood-alcohol content test but did not follow directions to allow the test to be completed.
New power for judges

The Ohio House has signed off on legislation to allow probate judges to issue search warrants, addressing an issue raised as part of an illegal gambling case in Stark County.
House Bill 161 passed 90-0 and heads to Gov. John Kasich for his signature and enactment.
The proposed law changes were offered by Sen. Scott Oelslager, R-North Canton, after the Ohio Supreme Court ruled a Stark County probate judge should not have signed off on a search warrant for an Alliance business.
Ohio House OKs bill to help dogs, cats

Paramedics would be allowed to assist injured dogs or cats during certain medical emergencies, under legislation passed Wednesday by the Ohio House. House Bill 187 passsed 89-0 and now heads to the Ohio Senate.
The legislation would authorize first responders, emergency medical technicians and firefighters to assist with hurt dogs and cats, though it prohibits those responders from administering drugs to injured animals without first consulting a licensed veterinarian.
Ghossain’s toy drive
The Boardman and Niles Ghossain’s Gourmet Mediterranean Foods are conducting toy drives through Dec. 18 to benefit patients at Akron Children’s Hospital Mahoning Valley in Boardman.
Ghossain’s customers at both locations, 3990 South Ave., Boardman, and 6261 Youngstown-Warren Road, Niles, can deliver donations of unwrapped, new books and toys on their next visit.
Monetary donations to benefit the Akron Children’s Hospital Mahoning Valley Toy Fund also will be accepted.

Toy drive extended

American Family Insurance Monica Hoskins Agency, 5500 Market St., Suite 118, is hosting a Christmas toy drive for military families, and collections have been extended through today.
Unwrapped toys, books or gift cards brought to the agency’s office will be donated to the Army National Guard 838th. The toys from the drive will be distributed to the 838th family support group at 475 Victoria Road, Austintown, at 10 a.m. Sunday.
