A 21-year-old man has been placed on two years’ probation after he pleaded guilty to felonious assault with a firearm and illegally conveying marijuana onto the grounds of a detention facility. Melvin Johnson III, of Riblett Road, drew the sentence Tuesday from Judge Lou A. D’Apolito of Mahoning County Common Pleas Court for the May 13 offenses, with conditions he participate in a day-reporting program at the Community Corrections Association, submit to random alcohol and drug testing, obtain his GED and maintain employment. In the plea deal, the prosecution dropped one count each of attempted aggravated burglary, improperly discharging a firearm at or into a habitation and retaliation and three other counts of felonious assault.

Youngstown police officers are hosting a “Fill a Cruiser” toy drive to help local families in need during the holiday season.
Take unwrapped toys to the parking lot of St. Christine Church, 3165 S. Schenley Ave., between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. Saturday. The gifts are intended for a 6-year-old boy, 5-, 4- and 3-year-old girls and infants. Any toy donation will be appreciated.
