Canfield Township to address road, sewer issues

Starr Centre/Old Tippecanoe Road, which is beyond its useful life, will be on its way to being revamped in July 2016, said Keith Rogers, Canfield Township administrator.
The Starr Centre/Old Tippecanoe Road and Storm Rehab Project, a joint project with Mahoning County, will receive funding July 1 to begin Phase One.
The entire project cost is $348,567 split into $149,117 from a grant, $132,435 from the local share with half coming from the county, and a loan of $66,995 with a zero percent interest rate and 10 years for repayment.
The project includes adding and replacing storm sewer components and repaving the road.
Other plans in place include abating tree problems in the Westbury Park Development devil strip.
The trees planted in the development were determined to be the wrong style.
“The root base gets into collector system – the downspout and sump-pump lines,” Rogers said. “If I get root systems in that, then houses will get backed up.”
Rogers said when the roots get bigger they will even heave sidewalks and cause tripping hazards.
Trustee Marie Cartwright asked Rogers to check on other developments to see if this issue is happening anywhere else and to figure out where to go from there.
“We need to make a plan of action for that sooner rather than later,” Cartwright said.
Cartwright said she’d like to see a standard set, and a plan put together so this doesn’t happen again.
“It’s going to cost us money to fix all of this now,” Cartwright said.
Short-term, Rogers said he had the trees trimmed to temporarily fix the issue, but a long-term plan has yet to be set.
“We did the best we could, but we have to make it safe for the people and the road,” Rogers said.
