Autism Society, mall to offer Caring Santa

Autism Society of the Mahoning Valley and the Eastwood Mall will offer a holiday photo event from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. Sunday in the main concourse at the mall, 5555 Youngstown-Warren Road, for children and young adults with special needs and their families.

Guests will have a photo taken with a caring Santa in a calmer, sensory-friendly environment, including lowered holiday lights, no music, and no lines or crowds. Trained elves will play games and provide other activities while guests wait to meet Santa.

The event is free. Professional photo packages are available for purchase.

Reservations are encouraged to reserve a spot to limit the wait time; visit autismmv.org.

Free dog and cat food giveaway set Dec. 19

Legacy Dog Rescue and Never Muzzled are sponsoring a holiday dog and cat food giveaway starting at noon Dec. 19 at Family Video, 801 N. State St.

The giveaway was made possible through a grant from Baltimore Life and a match from community funds.

The giveaway is intended to help families who are having trouble feeding their pets; the food will be given on a first-come, first-served basis.

To qualify for the distribution, the family must be receiving government assistance such as Medicaid, Food Stamps, SSI, etc. If the family is not receiving assistance, they must show proof of being on unemployment insurance or a pay stub showing that they are 150 percent below the federal poverty guideline. Also, a government issued-photo identification card is required.
