Kangaroo found on Ohio road is returned

NORTH RIDGEVILLE

The owners of a kangaroo found hopping down a Northeast Ohio street say they can’t figure out how it got away from its home at a retreat for rescued animals.

The Plain Dealer in Cleveland reports the 3-year-old male kangaroo named Foster was quietly standing with police when his owner arrived to retrieve him early Friday.

Someone had spotted the kangaroo in North Ridgeville and called police. An officer knew the animal had come from Joe and Candice Hanna’s 10-acre property nearby, and they were called to pick him up.

Candice Hanna says Foster stays in a heated barn at the property. She says they haven’t determined how he escaped, but they’re certain he couldn’t make it over their 8-foot-high fence.

Missing dog found in storm drain

BETHESDA, Md.

Officials in Maryland say a 30-pound dog rescued from a storm drain had been missing for over a year.

Rescue crews got the dog out of the drain Friday after a man walking his own dog spotted the other pup in the storm drain. It took crews two hours to get the Wheaten terrier out of the drain.

The 1-year-old dog named Cookie reportedly had been missing since October 2014. Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Service spokesman Pete Piringer says the dog’s owner has been located and will pick the dog up. Piringer says it’s believed Cookie got into the drain through a pipe at a nearby construction site.

Baby red pandas at Philly zoo named Betsy and Ben

PHILADELPHIA

A pair of baby red pandas at the Philadelphia Zoo have been named after two of the city’s most famous residents: Betsy and Benjamin.

Zoo officials said Friday that the monikers, which pay homage to Betsy Ross and Benjamin Franklin, received overwhelming support in a public naming contest.

Officials say the cubs’ birth on June 26 was important for red panda conservation, since the species is considered vulnerable in the wild. The brother and sister made their public debut Nov. 18.

Unlike giant pandas, red pandas are not members of the bear family. They are slightly larger than domestic cats and look similar to raccoons. They are native to Asia.
