The National Park Service and the U.S. Navy plan a joint memorial service today to mark the 74th anniversary of the Pearl Harbor attack.
The joint service is a rehearsal for what is expected to be a much bigger memorial service next year to mark the 75th anniversary of the attack by Japan that killed over 2,400 Americans and brought the U.S. into World War II, KTVI TV reported.
In previous years, commemorations took place at the Pearl Harbor Visitor Center. This year and next year, the ceremony will be at Kilo Pier. KTVI reported.
The Kilo Pier offers not only more space, but also a better view, Daniel Martinez of the National Park Service told KTVI.
The theme of this year’s commemoration is “Pathway to Reconciliation: From Engagement to Peace,” focusing on the rebuilding and solidifying the friendship between the U.S. and Japan.

Nobody on the ground was hurt, but all flights in and out of the airport have been halted.
Egypt to pay Israel $1.76 billion after halting gas supplies
JERUSALEM
Israel’s state-owned electric utility said Sunday that Egyptian natural gas companies have been ordered to pay it $1.76 billion in compensation for halting gas supplies.
Egyptian Prime Minister Sherif Ismail said Egypt would appeal the decision by an international arbitrator, state-run MENA news agency reported.
Egypt stopped selling natural gas to Israel in 2012 after months of attacks on a pipeline by militants in Egypt’s Sinai Peninsula.
The Israel Electric Corp. sued the Egyptian providers EGPC and EGAS for $4 billion in damages. The company said it suffered heavy damages after gas supplies were halted and that it was forced to buy more expensive fuel to generate electricity, raising its costs.
The company said Sunday that an international arbitrator awarded it $1.76 billion plus interest.
Cops arrest mom of baby buried alive
LOS ANGELES
Authorities have arrested the mother of a baby who was buried alive near a Southern California bike path. Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Sgt. Bob Boese said Sunday the woman was arrested late last week. He declined to release the woman’s identity, citing the ongoing nature of the investigation.
Boese said tips from the public and media coverage of the baby’s rescue led to the arrest.
The girl was believed to be 24 to 36 hours old when she was found Nov. 27. Two sisters walking on a bike path near a riverbed in Compton heard the child’s cry.
Two deputies found her wrapped in what appears to be a hospital blanket, buried in a hole under loose dirt and piece of asphalt. She was taken to a hospital in stable condition.
