Four-time defending FCS champion North Dakota State returned two of its four interceptions for touchdowns and tacked on a 100-yard kickoff return for a score. The Bison (10-2) had three interceptions in the first half, including a 30-yard touchdown return by Jalen Allison to make it 14-0. CJ Smith scored on a 32-yard interception return to give NDSU a 37-6 advantage early in the four quarter. Montana (8-5) had scored 135 points in its previous three games, after quarterback Brady Gustafson returned from injury.
Illinois State 36, Western Illinois 19
NORMAL, ILL.
Tre Roberson scored his second rushing touchdown to kick off the fourth quarter as No. 2 seed Illinois State used three late scores to sweep past Western Illinois in the second round of the FCS playoffs. Illinois State (10-2) advances to meet Richmond (9-3) in the quarterfinals on Saturday. The Red Birds led 7-6 at halftime, fell behind 12-7 in the third quarter but outscored Western Illinois (7-6) 21-7 in the fourth. Roberson, who passed for two TDs, scored on a 5-yard run in the final minute of the third quarter and opened the fourth with a 32-yard rushing TD. After the Leathernecks pulled to 22-19,
Richmond 48, William & Mary 13
RICHMOND, VA.
Jacobi Green ran for 141 yards and three touchdowns to help lead Richmond. Richmond (9-3) has now defeated its arch rival in consecutive games. The Spiders beat the Tribe 20-9 on Nov. 21. David Broadus finished with 60 yards and a touchdown on the ground and quarterback Kyle Lauletta added two more rushing scores for the Spiders, who ran 59 times for 302 yards total. David Jones had an interception and 100 yard return for a score in the second quarter, which gave Richmond a 21-3 lead. The Spiders led 28-10 at halftime and 35-13 after three quarters.
Jacksonville State 41, Chattanooga 35 OT
JACKSONVILLE, ALA.
Eli Jenkins ran for a 14-yard touchdown to send Jacksonville State to the FCS quarterfinals. The touchdown came after Brandon Bender intercepted Mocs quarterback Jacob Huesman in the end zone. Jacksonville State’s Troymaine Pope ran for 234 yards, the second-highest total in school history, and three touchdowns. Jenkins threw for 208 yards, going over 5,000 in his career, and an interception and ran for 195 yards and three scores. Jacksonville State had a 14-point lead in the third quarter but the Mocs (9-4) rallied to go ahead 35-28.
Colgate 44, James Madison 38
HARRISONBURG, VA.
Jake Melville threw two touchdown passes and ran for two more, leading Colgate to an upset win over James Madison. James Holland ran for a career-high 165 yards and two touchdowns on 27 carries, including a 2-yard run on third-and-1 on the Raiders’ final possession to give Colgate (9-4) its seventh straight win. Melville had 120 yards passing and a career-high 163 yards rushing.
Charleston Southern 14, The Citadel 6
CHARLESTON, S.C.
Mike Holloway rushed for 120 yards and two second-quarter touchdowns and Charleston Southern won its first FCS playoff game.
