Junior Civic League of Youngstown crowns 60th Miss Cinderella

The Junior Civic League of Youngstown crowned Myra Brenelle Corley as Miss Cinderella 2015 during its 60th annual Cinderella Ball on Nov. 27 at Mr. Anthony’s Banquet Center. The theme was “A Reflection of Excellence.”
Her court includes Courtney Teague of Ursuline High School as first attendant and Seaven Weaver of Austintown Fitch High School, second attendant.
Corley is the daughter of Myron and Dionne A. Corley and granddaughter of Rebecca Corley and the late Milton Corley, and Deborah Carpenter and the late James Carpenter. She is a member of Mount Calvary Pentecostal Church and is the Dominion youth choir secretary. She attends Boardman High School and participates in National Honor Society, Big Spartan/Litte Spartan mentoring, Link Crew, and is a Key Club officer, editor-in-chief of the Bugle and varsity cheerleader. She is the high school’s homecoming queen. Corley’s favorite quote is “Let every action of mine be something beautiful for God,” attributed to Mother Theresa. She plans to attend college and major in clinical psychology. She was presented by her uncle, James Carpenter III, and her escort was Darian Wilson of Youngstown State University.
Other debutantes presented at the gala included Maya Ballard of Ursuline; De’Ajah Green of Liberty High School; Jo’Vohna Hughes and Angela Johnson of Youngstown Early College; Maursadie McElroy of Boardman; and Marquett Samuels of Austintown Fitch.
Other escorts were Courtlyn Armstrong of Firestone High School; Duane Davis II of YSU; Vincent Fryer Jr. of Niles McKinley High School; Tylair Little of Warren G. Harding High School; Artemus Scissum Jr. of Boardman; Dorian Smith of Austintown Fitch; James Thomas Jr. of East High School and Choffin Career and Technical Center; and Jason Trice of the Academy of Urban Scholars.
The JCL welcomed the first winner of Miss Cinderella in 1956, Jeanne Lee McDowell, as a participant in the ball. She gave remarks and assisted Miss Cinderella 2014 Lyric Harden in crowning Corley. The Michael Austin Project provided entertainment.
Sponsors presented with awards for their contributions for scholarships included the YSU Foundation, DeBartolo Corp., Home Savings, Jackson Podiatry Inc., Sherise Curd, Community Bus Services, the city of Youngstown and the Youngstown mayor’s office and HLW Fast Track Inc.
The league’s scholarship program was developed to support qualified African-American students seeking higher education, and has awarded more than $590,000 to date. The Cinderella Ball is the sole fundraising event for the scholarship fund.
