CANFIELD

Canfield High School had two special visitors Friday to check off their lists of naughty and nice.

Krampus and Santa Claus were welcomed with cookies, drawings and decorations lining the room for the school’s German 3-4 class.

Karen Hummer, German teacher, said she saw this as an opportunity not only to host a cookie party appropriate for the season, but to use the occasion to work with students on expanding their food vocabulary.

Hummer turned the cookie party into a research assignment to culturally enrich her students and challenge them to immerse themselves in German baking styles.

In addition, the recent release of the horror movie “Krampus” made the subject even more relevant to the high-school students.

Seniors Kasey and Kristen Hood, twin sisters, worked on decorating the room for the event after school, appreciating the culture and mythological Krampus.

“Krampus is kind of like Santa’s enforcer,” Hummer said.

Kasey Hood said she liked getting to know about Krampus, something she might not have known about otherwise.

“It’s interesting to celebrate something that Americans don’t,” Kristen Hood said.

Senior Morgan Leonard got to appreciate the culture during a trip over the summer to Germany.

Leonard said she learned to appreciate the language more when she was visiting Germany and brought that appreciation back to the states with her.

“Visiting was honestly the time of my life. ... This is one of the best classes I’ve had,” Leonard said.

Junior Sydney Stewart said she found bringing culture into the classroom, especially with traditions such as Krampus, was the best part of the German class.

“We can all work together on the same thing. We are bringing in a lot of real-world things, and now we are studying culture and bringing art in. It’s just really nice,” Stewart said.

Throughout the next few weeks, students have the opportunity to indulge in more culture-food days.

Pictures with Krampus and Santa were offered throughout the remainder of the day.
