The teens would pick whichever candy they wanted to make the sushi with then eat after.

The Boardman library hosted a candy sushi event for teens in grades 9-12. Librarian Allison Graff put out several different types of candy for the teens to use to create their own sushi.

Every month the Boardman library hosts different events for people of all ages. The library tries to separate the activities into groups such as: babies, toddlers, children, tweens, teens and adults.

There were Rice Krispies Treats to use as the outside of the sushi, licorice, Swedish Fish, gummy worms, and frosting to hold it together and a fruit roll up to wrap everything up in. The teen participants used all the different ingredients to make different kinds of sushi.

One of the boys called his candy sushi a candy “burrito” because it was all of the candy smashed into a giant rolled up Rice Krispies Treat.

The other teens took their time and created sushi that looked like different kinds of real sushi someone could order from a restaurant.

“I like getting to hang out with the teens. It’s fun trying to show the library is more than people just shushing them,” said Graff.

Graff also mentioned that the Teen Advisory Board meets regularly at the beginning of each month to come up with ideas that would get teens to attend.

For example, in December the advisory board will try to create an event that is focused on a holiday theme.

The teens had about an hour to create their sushi, and once they were done, they could upload a picture of their creations to Instagram with the hashtag #librarytxt to show off what it looked like.
