Police responded to two suspected heroin overdoses within 24 hours on the same block this week on the West Side.

About 8:25 p.m. Tuesday, officers were called to a home in the 100 block of North Maryland Avenue, where they found a 25-year-old man on the floor and not breathing. Reports said paramedics arrived and tried to revive him, but they could not, and he was pronounced dead.

Police found several bags of suspected heroin and a syringe on a dresser directly in front of where the man was. Reports said the man’s mother told police her son had been battling a heroin addiction since he was 18, but he had taken a drug test Monday for his probation officer, and that was negative. The man’s girlfriend told police they were sleeping when the man woke up and told her he needed to throw up, reports said.

The man left the bedroom and either fell on the floor or lay down there, reports said.

About 2:35 p.m. Wednesday, police were dispatched to a house on the same block when they got a call saying the man’s girlfriend, 34, was ill and may have overdosed, reports said. An ambulance arrived and took the woman to the hospital. She survived, police said.
