$5K donation to go to Inspiring Minds
WARREN
On Wednesday, Inspiring Minds will receive a $5,000 check from Talmer Bank & Trust and hear a talk by former professional boxer Earnie Shavers of Warren.
The Talmer funding will support Inspiring Minds’ enrichment program, whose goal is to inspire under-served students of all ages to graduate from high school, pursue post-secondary education and become strong, successful members of the society.
Specifically, the money will benefit the education and college- and career-readiness programs, which aim to improve student grades, provide mentoring, build self-confidence and identify pathways to post-secondary education and career opportunities.
Shavers also will speak that day to high-school students at Inspiring Minds about his career as a professional boxer, being a two-time world heavyweight title challenger and fighting Muhammed Ali, as well as his current passion for inspiring young people to achieve their dreams.
Woman reports gun was traded for drug
YOUNGSTOWN
Police are investigating after a 44-year-old city woman told them Wednesday her son took her 9 mm semiautomatic pistol and traded it for heroin.
The woman told police her son, 21, took the gun from her car when he used it Tuesday evening and took it to a home on the South Side to trade for drugs. Reports said the woman went to the home Wednesday, and someone there told her they would give her the gun back for $400 and to meet that person at a Market Street gas station. The woman told police she was afraid she would be robbed so she called 911 from the gas station.
Reports said officers went to the home, and a person there told them the woman’s son had sold a gun to someone the previous evening for an illegal substance. The serial number was entered into a national database for stolen guns, reports said.
