Poland Middle School welcomed Julia Kalscheid on Nov. 23. Kalscheid, a colleague and several students came from Germany to visit schools in the Mahoning Valley area.

Kalscheid lives in a small village in Germany where she teaches biology and German. This was her first time coming to Ohio, and she was spending about a week here with a local host family. After her time in Ohio, she and her students will go to New York. Her colleague and students also stayed with host families who were more than happy to take them in.

The students in morning science classes welcomed Kalscheid, then she spent the afternoon observing language art classes. Classes in Germany are different than in America. Kalscheid explained that in Germany, the teachers go to the students and teach in different classrooms instead of the students going to different rooms for each class.

Having guests from Germany visit Poland gave the students an opportunity to ask questions about Germany. The students learned about Germany’s culture, their school system and anything else they were curious about.

Kalscheid said she was excited to spend Thanksgiving in America because there is no Thanksgiving in Germany.

“Nobody knows how it [Thanksgiving] is, so everyone is very excited,” said Kalscheid.

Adjusting to visiting America for only a short time started out a little hard, but Kalscheid said the longer she spends time around people, the more adapted she becomes.

Kalscheid said she is ready for “two weeks full of special moments.”
