CANFIELD

Lawmakers approved an ordinance that revises the city’s income and municipality tax code, which will have a negative impact on city revenues.

Council on Wednesday had to pass an ordinance to comply with state law.

“If a company makes less than $500,000 gross this coming year, they only have to report income to their home city, which will get a portion of what they make, and we will get zero. We are suffering big losses,” said Vickie Shook, income tax administrator.

The ordinance had to be adopted at the meeting to meet the requirement that becomes effective Jan. 1.

Shook said the ordinance decreases several city revenues, leaving administrators with less money to work with for the upcoming year.

In an effort to combat this financial loss, administrators had a special election in August to increase city income taxes. Voters turned down the proposed increase.

Shook said council is going to move forward with two plans of action: ensure residents are paying income taxes due to the city and adjust and make changes to the current budget to work with what the city has.

In another matter, council agreed to let city Manager Joe Warino submit the final application to accept the grant for the North Broad Street safety upgrade, Phase 3 Project, from the Ohio Public Works Commission.

Final applications are due Dec. 22 and the grant will be awarded by next July.
