Polish vigil planned
Youngstown
Polish Arts Club of Youngstown will host a traditional Wigilia (Christmas vigil) at 4 p.m. Sunday at Brier Hill Cultural Center, 145 Jefferson St. The program will feature singing of traditional Polish carols, or koledy.
This annual event, which recreates the Christmas Eve dinner held by Poles around the world, features traditional dishes such as oplatek, a wafer blessed by a priest; mushroom soup; poppy seed and noodles; and fried or broiled fish.
Dishes are served in 12 courses as a symbolic tribute to the 12 Apostles. The meal is intended to help participants prepare for the celebration of the birth of Christ.
The program is part of the club’s 80th anniversary. A social hour is planned from 4 to 5 p.m., dinner from 5 to 6 and entertainment between 6:30 and 8. There also will be 50-50 and basket raffles.
The wigilia is open to the public. Admission for adults is $30, $10 for children from 4 to 12 and free for those 4 and younger. For information and tickets, contact Sandra Cika, club president, at 202-297-0362.
