Polish club plans traditional event
YOUNGSTOWN
The Polish Arts Club of Youngstown will host a traditional Wigilia (“Christmas Vigil”) at 4 p.m. Sunday at the Brier Hill Cultural Center (former site of St. Casimir’s Parish), 145 Jefferson St., near Martin Luther King Boulevard. The program will feature a social hour, a traditional meatless dinner, and the singing of traditional Polish carols, or koledy.
This annual event, which recreates the Christmas Eve dinner served by Poles around the world, features traditional dishes such as oplatek, a wafer or bread that has been blessed by a priest; mushroom soup; poppyseed and noodles; and fried or broiled fish. Dishes are served in 12 courses as a symbolic tribute to the 12 apostles, and the meal is intended to help participants prepare for the celebration of the birth of Christ.
Sunday’s program, part of the yearlong celebration of the club’s 80th anniversary, will include a social hour from 4 to 5 p.m., a dinner from 5 to 6, and entertainment from 6:30 to 8. There will also be a basket raffle.
The Wigilia is open to the public. Admission is $30 ($10 for children 4 to 12). Reservations are mandatory; no tickets will be sold at the door. Call Alice Morrow at 330-792-2769.
