Court to hear challenge of death row inmate's rape sentence

COLUMBUS (AP) — The Ohio Supreme Court has agreed to hear the state’s challenge of a prison sentence received by a condemned Ohio killer in a rape case unrelated to his slaying of a Cleveland police officer in 2000.

The court today accepted the appeal by Cuyahoga County prosecutors in the case of death row inmate Quisi Bryan.

The 45-year-old Bryan was already on death row in 2014 when he was convicted of a 1994 rape based on newly tested DNA evidence.

A judge sentenced him to eight to 25 years based on sentencing laws in place at the time of the crime, but an appeals court said more recent sentencing laws should apply, bringing the prison term to between three and 11 years.
