Speed was factor in crash that killed Girard man, injured passenger

LIBERTY — Excessive speed was a factor in a single-car crash at 12:10 a.m. Sunday that killed a Girard man and critically injured his passenger, also from Girard.

The crash on Logan Way just south of Stanton Street, killed Serhiy Kozachuk, 39, and critically injured Konstantin Tolstykh, 24.

The Ohio State Highway Patrol said Kozachuk was driving a 2006 Infiniti G35 north on Logan Way when he failed to negotiate a curve in the road, drove off the right side of the road, striking a guard rail and utility pole and then off the left side of the road, striking a mailbox and two utility poles and then caught fire.

Kozachuk was pronounced dead at St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital. Tolstykh is in critical condition in that same hospital.

The crash remains under investigation.
