MVHS plans celebration for 140th birthday

The Mahoning Valley Historical Society plans to celebrate its birthday year round as the board, members and staff mark the Society’s 140th year Sept. 10.

The festivities kick off with a big birthday party and a week of events that highlight the organization’s collections, sites and programs.

Additionally, new special events will take place every month along with recurring favorites such as “Bites and Bits of History” and “Cookie Table and Cocktails.”

The Society also will start monthly open houses the third Saturday of each month alternating between the Arms Family Museum and Tyler History Center, which also will include activities such as behind-the-scenes tours and gallery talks,

Here is a listing of the weeklong celebration events:

140th Birthday Party, noon to 4 p.m. Sept. 12, Tyler History Center.

The free event will feature behind the scene tours, hands-on activities, cake and a salute to local history.

Founder’s Day Dinner, 5:30 to 8:00 p.m. Sept. 15, Arms Family Museum.

The annual dinner is $30 for MVHS members and $35 for guests. Call 330-743-2589 to RSVP.

Bites and Bits of History: James L. Wick, Jr., noon, Sept. 17, Tyler History Center.

There will be a presentation of James L. Wick, Jr., former MVHS President, one of the community’s influential figures of the 20th century.

Arms Family Museum open house, noon to 4 p.m., Sept. 19.

This event showcases the new location of the Business and Media Archives with entertainment from County Mayo, games and activities on the lawn and free food and drinks.
