Road work gets underway Monday in Farrell

Staff report

FARRELL, PA.

Pennsylvania Department of Transportation, beginning Monday, will close three streets in the city for state Route 718 improvement work.

The streets scheduled for closure are at their intersection with Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard to accommodate shifts in traffic patterns. There will be posted detours.

The closed streets and their detours are:

Roemer Boulevard, with a detour to state Route 418 (Council Avenue), Route 518, and Route 62.

Federal and Union streets, with both detoured to Idaho Street and Spearman Avenue.

PennDOT officials said Route 718 will continue to be closed to northbound traffic from Negley Street to Union Street. The posted detour uses Route 18 and Route 62 (Shenango Valley Expressway).

Route 718 will remain open to southbound traffic, with a 12-foot width restriction. Southbound traffic will be shifted to use the newly completed southbound lane while work gets underway on the northbound lane.

The detours are expected to be in place until the end of October.

The work underway is part of Phase 2 of the Broadway Avenue Improvement Project. This phase focuses on a 1.1-mile-long section of Route 718 from Roemer in Farrell to Malleable Street in the city of Sharon.

The project will widen and reconstruct Route 718 to provide a center left turn lane and radius improvements at various intersections.

Other work will include sidewalks with brick pavers, concrete steps, and highway lighting with decorative light poles. The project also will provide new traffic signals at current signalized intersections and updated drainage, utilities, signs and landscaping.

The project cost is $7,470,000, which PennDOT said will be paid entirely with federal funds. Contractor is Kirila Contractors of Brookfield.
