A Mahoning County grand jury indicted a man charged as a juvenile in a shooting death on the South Side almost a year ago.
Stashawn Dates, 17, of East Pasadena Avenue, is charged with aggravated murder, murder, two counts of aggravated robbery and two counts of felonious assault in the shooting death of Jesse Daviduk, 21.
Daviduk died Oct. 2 at St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital after he was taken off life support. He had suffered a bullet wound to the back of the head Sept. 15.
Reports said Daviduk was a passenger in a van during a drug deal when he was shot at East Dewey and South avenues.
The van’s driver told police he picked up Daviduk in Struthers, then they used the victim’s phone to arrange drug buys at the intersection, reports said. When they arrived, two men were waiting, and one man jumped in the van and sat behind Daviduk.
The man who jumped in the van pulled a semiautomatic handgun and said, “I want everything.” The victim turned around, and the man with the gun shot the victim, reports said.
The van driver drove away after he heard the gunshot, reports said. The gunman, who police said was Dates, then jumped out of the moving van, as the driver was taking Daviduk to the hospital.
Several minutes later, an ambulance crew found Dates lying unconscious in the middle of Dewey Avenue near the intersection, reports said.
Dates was taken into custody as a juvenile before his case was bound over to common pleas court.
Also, the grand jury handed up a nine-count child-pornography indictment against a West Side resident.
According to 21 WFMJ-TV, The Vindicator’s broadcast partner, Robert Dash Jr., 56, is charged with pandering obscenity involving a minor and pandering sexually oriented matter involving a minor.
According to the indictment, investigators found Dash in possession of material depicting minors engaged in sexual activity.
The charges stem from a search of Dash’s Matta Avenue home May 1 this year by agents from the Federal Bureau of Investigation and Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation.
Dates, Dash and others indicted on various charges will be arraigned Sept. 8 before Judge Maureen A. Sweeney in common pleas court.
