The Canfield High School Cardinal Pride marching band will host its 41st annual Canfield Show of Bands at Canfield High School Cardinal Stadium at 7 p.m. on Sept. 1.

The following bands, along with the more than 180 members of the Canfield Pride Marching Band, will take part in this year’s show of bands: Austintown Fitch Marching Band, Boardman Spartan Marching Band, Champion High School Marching Thunder, Poland Bulldog Marching Band, Struthers Wildcat Marching Band, Lakeview High School Marching Band and Youngstown State University Marching Pride.

The Cardinal Pride Marching Band is under the direction of Mike Kelly, Jim Volenik, Michael Fay, Dave Drevna with the percussion and Diana Liggitt with the flagline. Traci DeCapua is serving as Band Night chairperson.

This year, the band has experienced a surge of new members, with 66 freshman joining the group.

“We have had a big surge in membership with 66 freshman joining band this year. I believe this is the biggest class we have had,” said Bob Ward, band parent.

The band has been hard at work preparing for the Show of Bands and the upcoming marching band season. The full band started summer band daily practices on Aug. 3.

Coming off a successful year, the Cardinal Pride Marching Band will travel to Walt Disney World during spring break. They will give two performances at the Magic Kingdom, with the highlight being the Electric Light Parade.

The show for the 2015 Cardinal Pride Marching Band Season is titled “Beyond the Mask.” For each marching band show, a theme is chosen which unifies the music together with a concept. The Cardinal Pride Marching Band learns three drills and between four and six concert or stand still selections, plus the traditional pre-game show.

The opener of the show will be “Captain America March,” followed by “The Incredibles” and “Born This Way.” “Facade,” from the musical “Dr. Jeckyll and Mr. Hyde,” “Who Are you?” and “Dude Looks Like a Lady” will follow, with the closer being “Wishing You Were Somehow Here Again/Phantom of the Opera.” Other songs will include “Themes from Spider-man,” “Time Warp” and “Uptown Funk.”

This year’s senior drum major is Ryan DiThomas, with Grant DeCapua serving as junior drum major.

“We are blessed to have such a terrific mix of kids in band this year. Having 66 new freshman in marching band is a good challenge. It requires the upperclassman to step it up and help out where they might not have had to with less freshmen. And I’m so pleased at how these upperclassman are pitching in and helping the new band members with this very complex show material,” Kelly said.

Adult tickets for the 41st annual Canfield Show of Bands are $5, student/senior tickets are $3 and children under five are free.
