Poll: Kasich remains among the Top 10 GOP presidential hopefuls

COLUMBUS — Gov. John Kasich remained among the Top 10 GOP presidential hopefuls, but he didn't see much movement among Republican-leaning voters in a new national survey by the Quinnipiac University Polling Institute.

As was the case in the group's July poll, Kasich remained at 5 percent support. That tied with former Hewlett Packard Chief Executive Carly Fiorina, with six other Republicans ahead.

Business mogul Donald Trump padded his support, with 28 percent of Republicans questioned backing his candidacy, up from 20 percent in July.

Retired neurosurgeon Ben Carson was second with 12 percent. Four other candidates had 6-7 percent.

Trump also led the “no way” list, with 26 percent of Republican voters saying they don’t support his candidacy.

"Donald Trump soars, Ben Carson rises, Jeb Bush slips and some GOP hopefuls seem to disappear," Tim Malloy, assistant director of the poll, said in a released statement. "Trump proves you don’t have to be loved by everyone, just by enough Republicans to lead the GOP pack."

Connecticut-based Quinnipiac regularly gauges the opinions of Ohio voters on candidates and issues. Its new national survey included 1,563 registered voters, with 666 Republicans and 647 Democrats. The results have a margin of error of about 4 percentage points.

On the Democratic side, former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton topped other candidates, with 45 percent of Democratic-leaning voters backing her. U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders, from Vermont, was second with 22 percent, and Vice President Joe Biden, who has not declared a presidential run, was third with 18 percent.

Trump and Clinton had the worst favorability ratings.

Asked to say the first word that came to mind for different candidates, those polled most often said Clinton was a "liar," "dishonest” and “untrustworthy,” along with having "experience."

For Trump, the most-mentioned words were "arrogant," "blowhard," "idiot," "businessman" and "clown."

And for Bush, the most-mentioned words were "Bush," "family," "honest" and "weak."
